An ongoing correspondence on health, art-making, career longevity with Kim Sulju.
In June 2023, the artist Kim Sulju and I discussed how to make our art careers work, amidst momentous shifts in our personal lives, our families, our mental and physical health. We are multi-taskers: between us, we write, design, teach, edit, apply for artist residencies, funding, projects and try our best to stay on top of the tasks we have on our hands – nothing spectacular or extraordinary as an artist. Until Sulju fell very, very ill.
The problem, as we understood, is that we think we are capable of doing many things if we work our hardest. So afraid we are of a missing out in the receding sea of artist opportunities.
This correspondence is born out of the question: How do we survive as an artist amidst amidst personal upheavals? In every run, every stroll, every shower of fluorescent light washing over me in the malls and supermarket where I let myself get lost in, i wonder how do we keep the romance, the dream of making?
